Timber Tale: A Modern Interpretation of Traditional Chinese Architecture

Ancestor Hall Renovation by Eureka Limited

The design of Timber Tale by Eureka Limited draws inspiration from the subtle differentiations between the outside and inside, as well as the basic forms of squares and circles in traditional Chinese architecture. This unique approach is expressed through the rhythmic combination of solid pine and transparent glass in the facade, as well as the gradual morphing from straight to circular in the timber ceiling.

With close communication with the client and careful review of the architectural merit by specialists, Eureka Limited took a radical approach to renovating the Ancestor Hall. The challenge was to create connections with the exterior landscape while maintaining a sense of privacy for the sacred interior. The solution was an alternating facade of 120mm diameter treated pine poles and 120mm wide glass, creating a captivating rhythm that complements the dimensions of the existing building and its elements.

The soffits, balustrades, and stone floors were meticulously proportioned, with the panelling lines extending to the joints between the granite floor tiles. Inside, the timber poles in the soffit gradually transform from straight lines to circles at the center, where the Buddha sits below on the ground floor or rises up to celebrate the pitch roof on the first floor. Over time, the pine has developed a golden hue, echoing the existing ceramic roof tiles and adding to the overall aesthetic.

The realization of Timber Tale involved the use of pine for the exterior and bent laminated plywood for the interior. The space spans approximately 240m2, with timber members measuring 120mm in diameter for the treated pines and 120mm in width for the glass panels.

This project marked the beginning of a long collaboration between Eureka Limited and the client for the renovation of a Buddhist Park in Tai Po, Hong Kong. Timber Tale was completed in 2012, showcasing a modern reinterpretation of Chinese architecture and creating a subtle hierarchy among the various buildings in the park.

Timber Tale has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2016. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate exceptional expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. Timber Tale stands out for its technical characteristics and ability to evoke positive emotions, amazement, and wonder.
