At first glance, this public housing unit may seem ordinary, but behind the newly furbished door and security gate lies a truly remarkable space. Wesley Liu transformed this 260 square foot unit into a 2 bedroom home capable of accommodating up to 9 people.
The Master Bedroom features built-in furniture made from pine, including a double-sized bunk bed that provides ample sleeping space and doubles as storage. The wardrobe sliding doors are designed with extruding wood strips, adding both functionality and aesthetics. The second bedroom, secluded from the living room by a sliding door, serves as a private study room during the day and transforms into a hidden bed for sleeping at night.
The main living space is entirely multi-functional, with a long solid oak dining table that can be reconfigured to suit different needs. By sliding the sofa, the space opens up to enjoy entertainment on the large TV screen recessed into wood panel detailing. The clever use of mirrors, frosted glass, and lighting creates an illusion of spaciousness, while translucent panels and reflective ceiling features maximize natural light.
The bathroom, styled like a high-end resort, features materials protected from the humid conditions. A Japanese-style bath, illuminated mirror, and patterned tiles add to the luxurious atmosphere. The unit also incorporates a desk for work and a storage area for shoes, coats, and miscellaneous items.
Despite its small size, this unit has successfully maximized functionality and proved to be cost-effective. By reusing materials from other projects and minimizing waste, Wesley Liu has created a space that is both practical and sustainable.
The Hong Kong Public Housing Project, designed by Wesley Liu, showcases innovative solutions for living in a limited space.
