Scala: A Unique Stair Design

Transforming Spaces with Style and Functionality

Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie Style Houses, the Scala stair design by Despina Souhlas-Nebojsa Stanic offers a unique and innovative approach to interior design. With its combination of form and function, Scala creates a seamless transition between spaces, enhancing the overall aesthetic and functionality of any room.

The Scala stair design takes inspiration from buildings that utilize the effect of a tighter, lower space for a foyer to enhance the height of the following space. By modifying the lower tread design, Scala offers users two ways to experience the same design - first by stepping on it, and then by stepping through it. This innovative approach creates an enveloping space on the upper run, providing a transition through a smaller space to enhance the scale of the room on the upper level.

The Scala stair design is realized using raw steel and FSC certified wood with a non-VOC midnight mahogany stain. The bentwood wood treads are supported by a double steel stringer, creating a sturdy and visually striking structure. With a width of 48" and a rise of 7" over 15 risers, Scala is designed to meet both technical specifications and aesthetic requirements.

One of the key features of the Scala stair design is its ability to create a visual and functional connection between different levels of a space. The open loops of the lower run stretch upward to form a tunnel, allowing users to walk through from the landing to the upper floor. This transition not only adds a unique element to the design but also makes the upper floor appear larger as one passes through the condensed stair space and enters the subsequent room.

The Scala stair design was developed by Despina Souhlas and Nebojsa Stanic, who aimed to create an open stair that would de-emphasize the lower ceiling height on the upper level. Their goal was to design a stair that would not only serve its functional purpose but also enhance the overall aesthetic and spatial experience of the room. The Scala stair design achieves this by creating a gateway to the upper level, allowing for a seamless transition and adding a sense of grandeur to the space.

Located in Beverly Hills, CA, the Scala stair design project was completed within a specific timeframe. The design team conducted extensive research on precedents that utilized the concept of transitioning through a smaller space to emphasize a grander feel for the consequent space. Overcoming the challenge of expanding into an upper-level space, the open stair design of Scala successfully de-emphasizes the lower ceiling height on the upper level, creating a visually stunning and functional design.

The Scala stair design has gained recognition in the design industry and was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2016. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Scala stair design is respected for its integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings while contributing to a better world.
