Negative Chair: Redefining Space and Comfort

An Innovative Arm Chair Design by Azadeh Shariati & Babak Shariati

The Negative Chair challenges traditional notions of furniture design by utilizing negative space and transparency to create a unique and visually striking arm chair.

The Negative Chair, designed by Azadeh Shariati & Babak Shariati, reimagines the concept of a chair by utilizing negative space and transparency to create a visually stunning and functional piece of furniture. Inspired by the idea of minimizing visual impact while enhancing functionality, the designers sought to create a chair that exists and does not exist simultaneously.

Unlike traditional chairs that occupy physical space, the Negative Chair is built using only the negative space of a regular chair. The designers chose to use a transparent fabric, specifically spandex, which not only enhances the chair's visual consistency but also supports the force of gravity and distributes it onto the structure. The ergonomic design, simple and organic form, and light material create a sense of continuity in the space, showcasing the process of sitting and creating a new form.

The construction of the Negative Chair involves cutting the 4-way stretch mesh fabric into four double-layer pieces, which are then sewn together. Two frames measuring 700 x 700 mm are built, and the fabric is glued to both frames. The main structure consists of two squared frames connected with horizontal braces, providing stability and support. The fabric-covered frames are then fitted onto each side of the structure, completing the chair's unique design.

With dimensions of 760 mm x 710 mm x 710 mm, the Negative Chair is designed to provide a comfortable sitting experience while adding a touch of modernity and minimalism to any space. Its transparent and breathable nature allows for a seamless integration into various design aesthetics.

The Negative Chair was first exhibited in September 2015 at the OBJET / 01 / EXHIBITION / CHAIR DESIGN SHOW in Tehran. It garnered attention for its innovative approach to furniture design and its ability to transform the perception of space. The project, which started in March 2014 and concluded in August 2015, showcases the designers' dedication to research and experimentation.

Azadeh Shariati & Babak Shariati overcame various challenges during the design process, including finding a sewing pattern that would accommodate the unique fabric properties and sourcing the appropriate materials in Iran despite the embargo. Their perseverance and attention to detail resulted in the creation of a truly remarkable piece of furniture.

The Negative Chair has been recognized for its excellence and innovation, receiving the Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2016. This prestigious award acknowledges the chair's outstanding technical characteristics, artistic skill, and ability to evoke positive emotions and wonder.
