Shift stands out with its tilted outline, which suggests a sense of instability. However, this intentional design choice adds a dynamic element to the piece, making it visually captivating and unique. The marquetry bands, resembling belts, further enhance the structure's cohesion, giving the impression of holding it together.
What sets Shift apart is its use of high-quality materials and outstanding craftsmanship. The combination of flamed maple and African ebony veneer creates a striking optical contrast, elevating the design's appearance to a whole new level of sophistication.
Shift is not just a functional chest of drawers; it is an object that goes beyond pure utility. Its rhombohedron shape and meticulous craftsmanship make it a work of art that adds a touch of elegance to any space.
The realization of Shift involves a wood assembly structure covered with flamed maple veneer and marquetry bands made from African ebony. The precise fit of the ebony bands is achieved through a proprietary marquetry technique, showcasing the designer's attention to detail.
With dimensions of 190cm x 72cm x 72cm, Shift is a statement piece that demands attention. Its versatile design allows it to be used as a free-standing chest of drawers, thanks to the marquetry decoration on all sides, or placed against a wall for a more traditional setup.
The Shift project was initiated in Geneva in May 2015 and completed in December of the same year. Its exceptional design and craftsmanship were recognized with a Runner Up Award at the London International Creative Competition in 2015, solidifying its status as a remarkable piece of art furniture.
Shift draws inspiration from the world of decorative watches with cloisonné enamel dials. The aim was to combine the aesthetic appeal of these watches with contemporary marquetry and high-level craftsmanship, resulting in a truly unique and visually captivating design.
The design process for Shift presented several challenges. The first was to create a visually pleasing rhombohedron shape while ensuring the functionality of a chest of drawers. The second challenge was to add an aesthetic tension to the design through the placement of the ebony bands. Additionally, custom-made synchronized full-extension drawer mechanisms were developed to ensure a seamless user experience.
Shift by Eckhard Beger is a testament to the fusion of art, design, and craftsmanship. Its rhombohedron shape, dynamic design, and impeccable craftsmanship make it a standout piece in any interior. Winner of the Iron A' Design Award in 2016, Shift exemplifies the best in fine arts and art installation design, meeting professional and industrial requirements while providing fulfillment and positive feelings to its users.
