Unveiling Saara Korppi's Award-Winning Cognac Glass Design

Imbibing Tradition and Innovation in a Unique Glassware Piece

Renowned designer Saara Korppi introduces a unique cognac glass design, inspired by the fluidity of Finnish nature and the tradition of aging cognac. This design, a testament to the beauty of handcrafted artistry, was awarded the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2019.

Saara Korppi's inspiration for this unique cognac glass design stems from the captivating element of water in Finnish nature. The movement and transformation of water, from liquid to steam to ice, mirror the fluidity and versatility of glass. Both materials reflect light and shapes in intriguing ways, adding a layer of complexity to the design. The concept for this design was born on Korppi's 30th birthday, with the glass embodying the nuances of aging, much like the tradition of aging cognac for enhanced quality.

What sets this cognac glass apart is its free-blown technique, resulting in a thin, delicate glass. Each piece, unique in its formation, features two inner-blown arches at the base, creating a special flattened shape. This design allows the glass to rest on either side, offering a different perspective at every angle. The base's shape is designed to reflect light from various angles, enhancing the drinking experience.

The process of creating this glass design involves free-blowing in a hot-shop, a technique that requires a high level of skill and precision. The most challenging aspect was creating two identical blown arches at the bottom of the glass. After extensive research and experimentation with temperature and distances, Korppi found the perfect method to produce these unique pieces.

The cognac glass, measuring 100 mm in width and 105 mm in height, is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional. The design provides a comfortable grip and allows the user to appreciate the reflections of the liquid from all angles. After enjoying the cognac, the glass can be placed on either side on the table and is dishwasher safe, adding to its practicality.

This design project, which began in September 2016 in Osterbybruk, Sweden, and concluded in May 2017 in Helsinki, Finland, was exhibited in Ikkunagalleria Hytti in June 2017. The cognac glass design, a testament to Korppi's dedication to improving the functionality, shape, and reflection of glassware, was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2019. This award recognizes top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
