The Doubleface: A Surreal Chest of Drawers Inspired by Mexican Masks

Unveiling the Battle Between Good and Evil

The vibrant, unexpected, and surreal nature of the Mexican character has inspired a unique piece of furniture that reflects iconic Mexican masks. Designed by Ana Jimenez Palomar, The Doubleface is a chest of drawers that challenges perceptions of traditional Mexican culture while embracing contemporary design.

The Doubleface is part of a collection called "Los Enmascarados" (The Masked Ones), which draws inspiration from Mexican masks and their symbolic meanings. Each piece in the collection represents a different mask and explores the concepts and characteristics associated with it. The Doubleface, in particular, embodies the eternal battle between good and evil.

At first glance, The Doubleface appears to be a normal chest of drawers, with its feet firmly on the ground and drawers facing the right way. However, upon closer inspection, the unconventional and unexpected nature of the design becomes apparent. One side of the chest features an upside-down face, with its feet sticking dangerously up in the air. The drawer on this side is also upside down, adding to the element of surprise and mystery. When opened, this drawer reveals a flap door that leads to a hidden space for keeping books or magazines.

The creation of The Doubleface involved meticulous design and craftsmanship. Ana Jimenez Palomar utilized model making techniques, including laser cutting and CNC cutting in birch ply, to achieve a clean and seamless surface. The result is a visually striking piece that stands out in any space.

Measuring 1670 x 600 x 1200 mm, The Doubleface is not only a functional piece of furniture but also a work of art that sparks conversation and intrigue. Its unique design challenges traditional notions of form and function, inviting users to explore the unexpected.

The Doubleface was designed and made in England as part of Ana Jimenez Palomar's Masters degree project. The project, which started in 2012 and was completed in 2014, involved extensive research on Mexican masks and their cultural significance. By collaborating with a Mexican mask maker and conducting thorough secondary research, Ana was able to capture the essence of these masks and translate them into a contemporary design.

The Doubleface has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2015. This prestigious award celebrates designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. The Doubleface, with its unconventional shape and thought-provoking concept, embodies excellence and leaves a lasting impression on viewers.

The Doubleface is a testament to the power of design to bridge cultures, challenge perceptions, and create unique and captivating experiences. Ana Jimenez Palomar's creation invites us to embrace the unexpected and explore the hidden depths within everyday objects.
