Core: A Kinetic Light Sculpture by Hsin Lee

Transforming Architecture into Living Art

Core stands as a testament to the harmonious fusion of art, architecture, and technology. Its copper leaves, meticulously crafted from 87 brass pieces, gracefully open and close through intricate mechanical structures. This breathing-like movement not only adds a dynamic element to the sculpture but also transforms the building into a living body, symbolizing a beating heart.

The creation of Core required the expertise of a talented design team, including Art Director Hsin Lee, Designer Tseng Shih-gang, and Mechanism Designer Wang Hsiang-Ping. Together, they meticulously engineered a reciprocating grooved drum mechanism to trigger the movement of 12 central structures, connecting the 87 brass leaves and bringing the sculpture to life.

Combining different materials and employing various types of mechanisms, Core showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of its creators. The sculpture serves as a representation of nature's beauty and a living symbol of architectural design. Its presence within Kawabata Intcraft creates a captivating visual experience, where movement and light harmonize to captivate viewers.

Core interacts with its surroundings in a unique way. Suspended from the high ceiling directly above the spiral staircase, it offers viewers a range of perspectives as they ascend. The regular opening and closing of the artwork, accompanied by the projected light, creates an immersive atmosphere, making the entire space feel alive and breathing.

The journey to bring Core to life was not without its challenges. The design team overcame technical obstacles to ensure the sculpture accurately captured the opening and closing states of pine cones. By utilizing reciprocating screws, they successfully triggered the movement of the central structures and connected the brass leaves, achieving the desired dynamic and contracting effect.

Core was created in Taiwan, Taipei, with the project commencing in March 2020 and concluding in January 2021. It now resides permanently in Kawabata Intcraft, where it continues to mesmerize visitors with its captivating presence.

Recognized for its exceptional design, Core was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2021. This prestigious accolade celebrates designs that showcase creativity, resourcefulness, and technical excellence. Core's incorporation of art, science, design, and technology contributes to the improvement of quality of life, making it a true masterpiece.
