The Growth Curve: A Revolution in Sustainable Fashion

Deformable Clothing by Haiwei Wang: A New Dimension in Wearable Art

Exploring the intersection of fashion, sustainability, and technology, Haiwei Wang's award-winning design, The Growth Curve, redefines the concept of deformable clothing. Inspired by futuristic 3D modeling and ergonomic design, this innovative garment offers a unique blend of form, function, and environmental consciousness.

The Growth Curve draws its inspiration from the captivating changes in 3D modeling structures. Haiwei Wang, the designer behind this innovative piece, uses fishbone as the supporting frame of the garment, wrapped in elastic fabric to shape the overall organic form. The result is a flexible, changeable model that not only offers more possibilities for clothing but also stimulates the senses with its flowing shape.

What sets The Growth Curve apart from other designs is its unique 3D structure, reminiscent of a "soft sculpture". The garment is light, breathable, and capable of expansion and deformation, offering a variety of wearing methods to the wearer. Moreover, it promotes environmental protection and energy saving in the clothing industry by reducing fabric waste during production.

The main production materials of this fashion design are fishbone and elastic fabric. The fishbone functions as the basic framework, shaping the overall form, while the elastic fabric wraps the surface, generating the organic form. The combination of these materials and the application of mechanics principles result in a three-dimensional shape of curl, concave, and spiral.

The design interacts with the wearer in innovative ways, creating a variety of clothing models. The combination of fishbone and elastic fabric transforms the garment into not just a protective "armor" but also a second layer of soft skin. The manufacturing method allows for rapid prototyping of any shape and structure, achieving the integration of clothing and fundamentally realizing the three-dimensional shape of clothing.

The Growth Curve project started in October 2018 in Guangzhou and was completed in April 2019. It was exhibited in Beijing in May 2019. The project aimed to innovate the clothing structure and materials, exploring the free presentation of organic form in clothing conceptual design. The result is a "one clothing, many clothes" mode, innovating the clothing function and reducing the waste of clothing materials.

The design faced challenges in transforming the two-dimensional plane pattern into the three-dimensional space structure of clothing. However, the random and accidental changes of pattern arrangement brought unexpected structure and more possibilities to clothing modeling. The Growth Curve project carries out innovative experiments on the clothing structure, promoting environmental protection and energy saving in the clothing industry.

The Growth Curve was awarded the Golden A' Fashion, Apparel and Garment Design Award in 2021, a testament to its outstanding design and innovative approach. This award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. They are venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
