The Palace Creative Costumes

Creative Clothing Inspired by Qing Dynasty Court Culture

These creative costumes by Xinyue Zhang and Hongrui Zhou showcase the excellent traditional culture of the Palace Museum, modernizing the traditional costumes of the Qing Dynasty in design and treatment. By combining modern fashion and design trends, they highlight the court costume culture of the Qing Dynasty while reproducing the essence of traditional culture. The sea blue and wine red colors symbolize the nobility of court dress.

Mainly drawing inspiration from elements such as sea waves, Pankou (traditional Chinese button), sea cliff Jiang, and clouds, the designers have chosen materials like cotton silk, brocade, and Ou Gensha. The costumes feature oblique yarn edge technology, stacking pressure, and embroidery craft, resulting in different texture changes. The blue color represents the sea water, while the traditional red signifies elegance, subtlety, and restrained Chinese aesthetics.

These creative costumes were used at the Palace Cultural Event Conference, combining the essence of court clothing with contemporary design. The project was completed in Shenyang, China in 2019, and the costumes measure 450mm in width and 1600mm in height.

Inspired by the traditional cultural background of the Palace Museum in Shenyang, this design project combines traditional clothing design with modern aesthetics. It promotes cultural inheritance and development while showcasing the creative redesign of palace clothing. The challenges faced included the combination of traditional Chinese culture with modern design and the difficulty of manual sewing and processing of elements along the sea cliff Jiang.

These creative clothes for Qing Dynasty court women were specially designed for the second exhibition of the Shenyang Palace Museum. They borrow elements from Qing court women's clothing, incorporating Pankou, Haiyajiang, cloud, wave, and other design elements. The materials used include cotton, brocade, Ougen sand, and silk. The costumes feature twill edge hand sewing technology, embroidery, and variations in different textures. The elegant sea blue and wine red colors create a grand display for the Palace Museum New Year.

This design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Fashion, Apparel, and Garment Design category in 2019. The award recognizes outstanding and creatively ingenious designs that demonstrate experience, resourcefulness, and best practices in art, science, design, and technology. These costumes exhibit strong technical and creative skills and contribute to quality of life improvements, making the world a better place.
