The Travel Bra, designed by Annie Holden and Brenda Barnett, is a unique solution to a common problem faced by travelers. The design was inspired by Holden's experiences as an anthropologist traveling in remote and unsafe places. The need to carry cash, pay field workers, and store valuables such as data sticks, without worrying about theft or loss, led to the creation of this innovative product.
Unlike traditional money belts, which can be hot, obvious, and unattractive, The Travel Bra is designed with comfort in mind. It features no underwire, wide straps, and an anti-odor fabric treatment, making it ideal for long periods of wear, especially while seated in vehicles.
What sets The Travel Bra apart from other designs is its patented drop-down mesh pocket, which can store cash and even stretch to accommodate a passport. When not in use, this pocket folds up under the band. The bra also includes a side mesh stretch sleeve for a credit card or hotel room key, mini-pockets integrated into the shoulder straps for jewelry or scan cards, and additional storage under the cups for more cash. One version even includes a front pocket for lipstick storage.
Designing a garment that was both supportive and comfortable while meeting anti-theft objectives posed a significant challenge. However, after two years of hard work, the design team, led by Dr. Annie Holden and lingerie designer Brenda Barnett, successfully overcame this hurdle, creating a product that is not only functional but also comfortable and stylish.
The Travel Bra's innovative design has not gone unnoticed. It was awarded the Golden A' Fashion, Apparel and Garment Design Award in 2017, a prestigious accolade granted to outstanding, trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. These are venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
In terms of intellectual property, The Travel Bra holds an Australian Examined and Approved Innovation Patent, with a USA patent pending and an International Patent Application No. PCT/AU2016/000435. The Travel Bra is a testament to the power of innovative design, demonstrating how creativity can transform a simple garment into a tool for security, convenience, and comfort.
