Labyrinth Table

Exploring a Small Universe

The Danish designer and craftsman Benjamin Nordsmark has created the Labyrinth Table to show how a well-known object like a table can be given an extra dimension by creating a small universe inside of it.

The Labyrinth Table is not your ordinary piece of furniture. With a labyrinth built inside, it adds a touch of intrigue and mystery to an otherwise basic table. Benjamin Nordsmark wanted to challenge his craftsmanship and create a unique story within a familiar object.

What sets the Labyrinth Table apart is its ability to generate nostalgic feelings and encourage interaction among people. The table features a labyrinth with several walls under a sheet of diamond glass. Inside, there are six characteristic figures that can be moved around using handles underneath. This interactive element invites users to explore and delve deeper into the story of the labyrinth.

To ensure durability and stability, the table is built with a steel base and covered with a 5 mm layer all over. The steel base not only provides strength but also allows the handles to stick to all surfaces of the table. The top is adorned with an 8 mm diamond glass sheet, adding a touch of elegance to the design.

The Labyrinth Table measures W: 1600 mm, D: 1000 mm, and H: 760 mm. Its technical specifications include an 8 mm diamond glass sheet on top. The design was brought to life in New York in October 2013, with sketching and construction taking place between February 2014 and January 2015.

Creating the Labyrinth Table came with its fair share of challenges. One of the main hurdles was cutting the pieces of maple wood at a 45-degree angle and attaching them to the steel base. However, Benjamin Nordsmark's craftsmanship and determination prevailed, resulting in a stunning and unique piece of furniture.

The Labyrinth Table has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2015. This prestigious accolade is given to designs that showcase outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. The Labyrinth Table stands out for its technical characteristics and ability to evoke positive emotions, amazement, and wonder.
