Home: A Stringed Symphony of Nostalgia and Innovation

Beck Storer and Paul Meeuwsen's Award-Winning Installation Blends Typography and Sculpture

Beck Storer and Paul Meeuwsen, renowned creative directors, have transformed a simple concept into a captivating art installation. Their project, Home, is a unique blend of typography and sculpture, using over 1000 meters of fluorescent pink string to craft an emotive message. This innovative design has earned them the Silver A' Fine Arts and Art Installation Design Award in 2017.

Home is not just an art installation; it's a journey into nostalgia. The back wall is adorned with vintage 1960 paintings, while small personal mementos are scattered throughout the display. The main attraction, however, is the typographic message crafted from a thousand meters of pink string. At different angles, the string appears 3D, tricking the viewer's eye and encouraging them to question what they are seeing.

The design process was not without its challenges. One of the main issues was ensuring the string was taut enough to tie from one point in multiple angles, both vertically and horizontally. Halfway through the creation, the entire word collapsed. However, this setback allowed the designers to identify weak points and quickly finalize the installation.

The public engaged with the installation by viewing it at different angles, questioning what they were actually seeing. They were also encouraged to post images of it on Instagram, asking a broader public how they would interpret the image, thus continuing the inquiry into how people would deconstruct and interpret the typographic installation.

Home started as a project in October 2015 and was completed within a week in Melbourne, Australia. The design was inspired by the designers' love for typography and their desire to explore a tactile outcome. Paul Meeuwsen's background as a lecturer in typography provided a solid foundation of knowledge for the project.

Home is a testament to the designers' creativity and technical expertise. It's a unique blend of art and design that pushes the boundaries of traditional typography. The installation not only won the Silver A' Fine Arts and Art Installation Design Award in 2017 but also left a lasting impression on its viewers, evoking memories of one’s home and challenging their perception of art and design.
