The design of Coralarc is a result of deep study into the rules of coral growth, transformed into organic modeling through computer technology. The designers meticulously studied the process of coral cells pushing, copying, and growing with each other, slowly forming an organic curved surface over time. Each stage of the process was recorded, creating a beautiful and intricate design.
What sets Coralarc apart from other installation art is its unique blend of material research, computer computing, and machine 3D printing technology. The use of transparent materials gives the installation a beautiful, fantastical form reminiscent of undersea coral, complete with a pure luster. The design aims to evoke the boundless shores and skies of the sea, showing different features in different periods of time.
The realization of this work was made possible through the use of a computational design tool, a robot, and PETG materials. The project dimensions are 5,000 mm x 1,500 mm x 220 mm, making it a substantial and impressive piece of art.
Shih Yuan Wang and Yu-Ting Sheng were not alone in their creation of Coralarc. They were assisted by a team of dedicated individuals who contributed to the realization of this project. The designers note that Coralarc utilizes algorithms to simulate the rules of pushing, and growing among cells. After dynamic stacking along the time axis, it gradually forms an organic curved surface. The work utilizes transparent materials to express the beautiful changing form and pure luster of undersea corals.
