LUMIBOLIC: An Interactive Art Installation

Creating Dynamic Visual Vibrations through Light and Motion

LUMIBOLIC is an interactive art installation that combines hyperbolic paraboloid geometries with luminous surfaces composed of strands of glowing EL wire. Designed by Meredith Sattler & Steve Lee, this unique installation responds to sound and motion inputs, generating dynamic visual vibrations inspired by Op-Artists Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely.

LUMIBOLIC is an interactive and occupiable environment that captivates viewers with its mesmerizing visual effects. The installation, winner of the LA Skyline 2016 competition, was exhibited at Bank of America Plaza in downtown Los Angeles. Composed of 1,200 meters of EL Wire, the installation visualizes sound and motion through dynamic lighting patterns.

The installation consists of twelve half parabolic surfaces, each housing 24 strands of electroluminescent wire. These strands respond individually to volume levels, while motion sensors activate and deactivate geometries within the Lumibolic based on visitors' motion. The result is a captivating display of light and movement that engages and interacts with the audience.

The space frame structure of Lumibolic is made of PVC pipe and 3D printed joints finished with polyurethane paint, adding a high gloss finish and protecting the surfaces. The combination of the hyperbolic paraboloid geometries and the EL wire creates a visually stunning experience from different vantage points.

The interactive scenarios of Lumibolic operate in two different modes: motion-based and sound-based. In the motion-based mode, motion sensors activate pre-programmed movements in a sequence, activating different groups of strands with various visual effects. During inactive hours, Lumibolic enters a breathing mode, with slow visual motions created by partial strands without revealing the overall shape. In the sound-based mode, the EL wire responds to live sound or audio based on the volume level, creating dynamic visual movements.

LUMIBOLIC was exhibited at Bank of America Plaza in downtown Los Angeles from February 11th to March 18th, 2016. The installation creates an interactive space-time experience, utilizing visual and optical illusions inspired by Op-Artists such as Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely. The combination of motion and sound sensors, along with the modulating lighting effects, produces dynamic visual vibrations that engage and captivate viewers.

LUMIBOLIC is a testament to the power of art, architecture, design, innovation, and technology coming together to create a unique and immersive experience. It pushes the boundaries of what is possible in interactive art installations and leaves a lasting impression on all who encounter it.
