Prince John: A Captivating Book Illustration

Bringing the Essence of Ivanhoe to Life

The Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott, known as the founder of the historical novel genre, penned Ivanhoe in 1819. This timeless tale explores the principles of honor, fidelity, justice, and love. Inspired by the eternal relevance of these human values, renowned designer Mykola Lomakin embarked on a project to create a captivating book illustration. Drawing inspiration from the Bayeux Tapestry, medieval manuscripts, and the works of renowned painters such as Hans Holbein, Albrecht Durer, and Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, Lomakin sought to transport readers to the world of Ivanhoe.

Lomakin's illustration stands out with its unique approach to capturing the essence of an old book. Dividing the image into three parts, the central section unravels the plot, while the top and bottom sections intricately weave in complementary details that enhance the composition's expressiveness. The illustration was meticulously crafted using paints on toned paper, with the final touches added digitally using a graphic tablet.

One of the standout features of Lomakin's design is the use of strong tea to tone the paper, creating a subtle marble-like texture. This technique, combined with the application of watercolors and oil paints, adds depth and character to the illustration. The artist also employed acrylic to create a textured stone effect, further enhancing the overall visual experience.

Measuring 225x330 mm, this masterpiece showcases Lomakin's exceptional talent and attention to detail. The choice of materials, including paper, acryl, watercolors, oil paints, and a graphic tablet, highlights the designer's commitment to creating a high-quality and visually captivating piece.

By meticulously bringing the characters and scenes from Ivanhoe to life, Lomakin's illustration aims to intensify the visual expressiveness of the book, captivating readers and inviting them into a world of knights, chivalry, and adventure. The warmth and intimacy of holding a beautifully illustrated book cannot be replicated by electronic versions, making Lomakin's work a testament to the enduring appeal of printed books.

Completed over a period of six weeks between April and June 2018, this illustration is part of a larger art project. The project, a personal initiative of the designer, comprises 21 illustrations, including three double-page spreads, as well as decorative elements that complement the text in the same style as the illustrations. Mykola Lomakin undertook this project in Kharkiv, Ukraine, immersing himself in historical research to ensure the accuracy and authenticity of the characters and settings depicted.

Lomakin's dedication to historical accuracy and his ability to convey the dramatic atmosphere of Ivanhoe were among the main challenges he faced during the project. Collecting historical material and bringing the novel's characters to life required extensive research and attention to detail. However, the end result is a stunning illustration that captures the essence of the book and transports readers to the medieval world of Ivanhoe.

Recognized for its exceptional design and artistic merit, Prince John, the book illustration by Mykola Lomakin, was awarded the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2020. This accolade acknowledges the design's practicality, innovation, and adherence to professional and industrial standards. By integrating industry best practices and showcasing competent technical characteristics, Prince John contributes to a better world while providing fulfillment and positive emotions to its viewers.
