The design concept for this residential apartment was to create a free-flowing space that invites the beauty of the outdoors inside. The architects removed solid walls and introduced movable see-through bookcases to define different areas without permanently separating them. This innovative approach allows for flexibility in the use of space, making the apartment feel larger than its actual size.
The designers drew inspiration from the nearby mountains and hot springs, incorporating elements that reflect the spirit of the natural surroundings. White-washed timbers, ash and walnut timber framed windows and floors, and live artwork were used to recreate the light and spatial essence of the mountains. The result is an apartment that not only offers breathtaking views but also a sense of tranquility and harmony with nature.
Utilizing a combination of marbles, imported digital printed ceramic tiles, LED light strips, grey mirrors, black paint coated steel plates, timber veneer panels and flooring, clear mirrors, paint, and bulletin boards, the designers were able to bring their vision to life. The careful selection of materials and finishes adds to the overall aesthetic appeal of the space.
One of the main challenges faced by the design team was the presence of existing columns that fragmented the apartment and obstructed sightlines to the windows. By removing these partitions and replacing them with movable see-through bookcases, the architects were able to create a more open and connected space. Natural light now permeates through the apartment, making every room vibrant and alive.
The transformation of this 40-year-old apartment took place over the course of a year, from November 2013 to November 2014. The result is a contemporary residence that stands the test of time and reflects the surrounding environment. The use of minimal lines and natural materials ensures that the design remains timeless and in harmony with its surroundings.
