Bend Modular Seating System

Modular Seating System for Modern Lifestyles

The Bend Modular Seating System, designed by Marc Scimé, offers a versatile and scalable solution for open domestic and commercial environments. With its unique design and functionality, Bend provides flexibility to match the demands of modern lifestyles.

Today, traditional boundaries are blurring, and the way we work and live is changing. Professionals no longer have assigned office spaces, and work can happen anywhere, anytime. Leisure and activity are no longer mutually exclusive. Modern interiors are characterized by open environments that seamlessly integrate the outdoors, catering to our biophilic desires.

Bend is a modular seating system that features softened angular shapes, creating a visually appealing and comfortable seating experience. It is part of the Bend & Transition ecosystem, which includes a range of seating and table options for various gathering areas. Unlike typical furniture collections, Bend & Transition offers the flexibility to adapt to different lifestyles in the digital age, whether indoors, outdoors, or somewhere in between.

The Bend sofa prototype, pictured here, is just one example of the vast range of seating types and solutions that the modular system can offer. It can be customized to suit different needs, whether for working, relaxation, waiting, or socializing. The possibilities are endless.

When it comes to the realization of Bend, advanced technology plays a crucial role. The prototyping process involves 3D CAD and 3D printing, along with industrial equipment and methods. For industrial production, Bend's main modular aluminum components are made using extrusion and die-cast processes, ensuring durability and strength. The seating is upholstered with a state-of-the-art textile made of a high-tech polypropylene fiber, offering a natural feel and excellent performance suitable for both indoor and outdoor environments.

With Bend's modular components, various seating configurations can be created, ranging from small stools to ganged seating islands. This makes it suitable for a wide range of public areas, such as airport lounges, museums, or gardens. The seating can be arranged in different angular relationships, creating unique spaces or personal zones. The seat positions can be optimized for social interaction or engagement with activities, presentations, or views.

The Bend project started in September 2014 in Pasadena, California, and was completed in April 2015. It was exhibited at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena as part of the spring term graduate show. The design of Bend was the culmination of extensive research, exploring modern history, evolving workplace and lifestyle trends, and their reflection in architecture and furniture design.

Overcoming various challenges, including research, design, engineering, prototyping, and exhibition management, Bend was successfully realized. The result is a modular seating system that seamlessly integrates into modern environments, providing comfort, flexibility, and style.

Bend seating by Marc Scimé is a testament to the designer's commitment to creating furniture that caters to the needs of modern lifestyles. With its unique design and versatility, Bend offers a solution for open spaces, whether indoors or outdoors.
