Trace of Normal: A Table That Talks

T.O.N.E Studio's Award-Winning Design Encourages Silent Communication

Introducing the Trace of Normal, a unique table design by T.O.N.E Studio that uses thermo-paint to foster communication in a modern world where close relationships can often feel burdensome. This innovative piece of furniture won the Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2018.

Modern society is filled with individuals seeking to express their existence and communicate with others, yet they often feel overwhelmed by the intimacy of close relationships. T.O.N.E Studio's Trace of Normal table addresses this paradox, encouraging communication through ordinary actions rather than direct conversation.

The table's unique properties lie in its use of thermo-paint and seal engravings. When a cup or teapot filled with hot water is placed on the table, the heat causes the seal engraving to leave a trace on the table's surface. These traces, left behind from daily use, create a sense of shared space and silent communication among users.

The Trace of Normal was inspired by traditional Korean furniture, specifically the "soban". The table's top is made from urethane plywood, with the body parts crafted by a metal processing company and finished with a brass color. The tea set is made from oak and brass, with the wood's natural pattern highlighted by a coating of ottchil, a traditional Korean lacquer.

The design process was not without its challenges. Finding a material that could facilitate silent communication was a significant hurdle, as was sourcing thermo-paint within Korea. The team also had to ensure the paint would respond only to the temperature of hot water, not human touch. Despite these difficulties, T.O.N.E Studio succeeded in creating a design that subtly captures the complexities of modern human relationships.

The Trace of Normal is more than just a table; it's a testament to the power of design in shaping human interaction. Through its innovative use of thermo-paint and seal engravings, it offers a unique way for people to connect and communicate, reflecting the intricacies of modern relationships in its intricate patterns. As T.O.N.E Studio prepares to secure copyrights for this design, the Trace of Normal continues to leave its mark, not just on the table's surface, but on the world of design as well.
