Gambit: A Unique Chess Table Inspired by the Industrial Revolution

A Sophisticated and Stylish Piece by Fabrizio Constanza

Gambit is a one-of-a-kind chess table that takes inspiration from the industrial machinery of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Designed by Fabrizio Constanza, this table combines the aesthetics of war and chess with the exposed mechanisms of early steam machine technology, creating a sublime experience for players.

This chess table stands out with its asymmetrical design and intricate details. It features aluminum elements that support two oval glass tops. The topmost glass serves as the playing surface for chess, while the lower one can hold beverages or other items. The table's base consists of two vertical shafts connected by horizontal extensions, creating a complex and visually appealing structure.

The main shaft of the table has four subsystems with four arms extending from a ring to support the glass top. At the bottom, three stabilizing legs provide balance and stability. Additionally, an extension from the middle of the main shaft runs to a lean shaft, functioning as a fourth leg and supporting the second glass top. The combination of form and function in this design creates a sophisticated and stylish piece of furniture.

The table tops are made of 12mm template glass, while the base is crafted from aluminum using lathe and milling techniques by master craftsmen. The dimensions of the table are 1010mm/650mm/800mm, making it a statement piece in any space.

Gambit is not just a chess table; it is a luxurious gentleman's decorative piece. The auxiliary top provides space for drinks, cigars, and cellphones, allowing for multitasking during a game. The oval board game surface allows for easy movement around the board, adding to the overall convenience and functionality of the design.

Creating custom luxury items like Gambit can be time-consuming due to the nature of the job and the need for constant client feedback. However, the result is a unique and meticulously crafted piece that meets specific requirements and exceeds expectations.

Gambit was created using industrial design methodology, including project management, budgeting, research, hand sketching, 3D modeling, material selection, production technique selection, production supervision, quality control, and delivery. The design process took three months, while production, assembly, and delivery took an additional month and two weeks.

This exceptional design has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2023. This award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Gambit's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contributes to a better world.
