Grand Mesa: A Blend of Nature and Mid-Century Modernism

Juozas Songaila's Award-Winning Executive Desk Design

Inspired by the largest flat-topped mountain in the world and mid-century modern furniture design, Juozas Songaila's Grand Mesa is a testament to the fusion of nature and design. This executive desk, awarded the Golden A' Furniture Design Award in 2016, is a symbol of productivity, creativity, and timeless elegance.

Grand Mesa's design is a unique blend of form and function. Its clean, confusion-free form is easy on the eyes, promoting a state of mind conducive to creativity. The desk's two-toned design is highlighted by handpicked oak tripod legs, infusing any interior with the character of mid-century modernism. Like its namesake, the Grand Mesa firmly designates a place for productivity.

The desk's realization is a marriage of tradition and modern technology. Crafted from solid wood boards and legs, the Grand Mesa is built in the same way as furniture was constructed in old times. However, it also incorporates present-day technology, such as Blum rails for push-up drawers, eliminating the need for handles and maintaining a clean design.

Grand Mesa's design is not just about aesthetics; it's about interaction. The massive top body contrasts with the slim, elegant tripod legs, creating a sense of movement in an otherwise immovable piece of furniture. This contrast allows users to appreciate the desk from different perspectives, adding a layer of depth to its design.

The design and manufacturing process of Grand Mesa took place over a year, from 2015 to early 2016. The oak wood used for the body of the desk comes from the lush Lithuanian forests, while manufacturing takes place in the industrial city of Kaunas. The project presented a challenge: creating a workspace that is both reliable and elegant. The solution was a desk that appears solid and immovable, providing a secure place for creation and contemplation, while its tripod legs add a touch of elegance.

Grand Mesa is more than just a desk; it's a statement. Whether it's a home desk or an executive desk, it influences the state of mind of its users, offering a workspace that is easy on the eyes and conducive to creativity. It's a timeless piece that infuses any interior with the character of mid-century modernism, a testament to Juozas Songaila's design prowess and vision.
