Introducing Bamboo Joint, a modular shelf designed by Yu Ren that combines functionality, sustainability, and a touch of nature. This innovative piece of furniture is specifically tailored for small-sized households and renters in the digital age.

With its support rods resembling bamboo joints, Bamboo Joint offers a unique and aesthetically pleasing design. The laminates are ingeniously installed without the need for tools, relying solely on their own gravity. This tool-free assembly system allows users to easily customize and adapt the shelf to their specific needs.

One of the standout features of Bamboo Joint is its flat packaging, making it convenient for transportation and reducing the carbon footprint associated with shipping. Additionally, users have the flexibility to purchase individual plates and metal rods as needed, further promoting sustainability and resource efficiency.

The environmentally friendly solid wood panels, metal support rods, and head knobs used in the construction of Bamboo Joint ensure durability and stability. The holes in the panels are equipped with rubber pads, enhancing the connection between the panels and the metal support rods.

Measuring at 400mm in width, 400mm in depth, and 280mm in height, Bamboo Joint is designed to fit seamlessly into various living spaces, providing both storage and display options.

Inserting the support rods into the pre-drilled holes of the laminate and firmly pressing them in place is all it takes to assemble Bamboo Joint. The modular nature of the design allows users to experiment with different configurations, adapting the shelf to their changing needs and the available space in their homes.

Yu Ren embarked on this project in Shenzhen in February 2021, with the final design completed in July 2021. The research behind Bamboo Joint was driven by the growing trend of small-sized and rental housing, as well as the increasing demand for flat-packed furniture in the digital era. By offering tool-free installation and modular assembly, Bamboo Joint empowers users to easily personalize their living spaces.

Overcoming the challenges of designing for small-sized residential families and renters in the age of online shopping, Bamboo Joint prioritizes environmental sustainability and resource recycling. By providing users with affordable options and the ability to replace or recycle worn-out components, the design offers a cost-effective and eco-friendly solution.

Bamboo Joint has been recognized for its ingenuity and creativity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2022. This prestigious award celebrates designs that incorporate best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
