Revolutionizing Seating: The Lunule Chair

Arsalan Ghadimi's Award-Winning Design Merges Tradition with Ergonomics

Introducing the Lunule Chair, a groundbreaking design by Arsalan Ghadimi that redefines the concept of seating. Inspired by traditional sitting habits, the Lunule Chair is a testament to innovative design, cultural reflection, and ergonomic study.

People in Ghadimi's home country have a history of sitting on the floor, often in a cross-legged position. Despite the global prevalence of chairs, many still prefer this traditional posture. Ghadimi took this cultural habit as inspiration, aiming to create a chair that accommodates this preference. The result is the Lunule Chair, a unique piece of furniture that allows for comfortable cross-legged sitting.

The Lunule Chair's unique properties lie in its curved surface shape, designed to distribute the body's weight evenly from the buttocks to the outside of the knee and thigh. This design ensures that even prolonged sitting does not lead to discomfort. The chair also provides support to the caudal vertebrae, increasing waist support. It's not just a reflection of culture, but a study of ergonomics.

The chair is constructed with a molded sponge wrapped around the outer surface, covered with leather, and supported by a wooden structure and legs. With a seat height of 450 mm and a width of 400 mm, the chair stands at a total height of 600 mm. The Lunule Chair is a perfect blend of ergonomics, leather, foam, and wood.

The Lunule Chair was created in 2018 in Tehran, Iran, after extensive research and development. Ghadimi and his team made over ten models, experimenting with sponge attachments to determine the optimal model. They also spent considerable time crafting the seat's surface, ultimately choosing a combination of leather and wood.

One of the biggest challenges in creating the Lunule Chair was the lack of an original shape for reference. Ghadimi couldn't draw an accurate form to fit the body, but he overcame this challenge through persistent experimentation. The final product, the Lunule Chair, is a combination of strength, beauty, and practicality. It's a chair that can be converted into a stool by removing the backrest, suitable for those who prefer sitting cross-legged.

The Lunule Chair's innovative design earned it the Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2019. This prestigious award is given to top-tier, creative designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The Lunule Chair, with its strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, certainly fits the bill.
