Rt: A Minimalist Stool and Side Table Inspired by Chinese Tangram

A Unique Combination of Form and Function

Hangzhou designer Li Xiaokai introduces Rt, a minimalist piece of furniture inspired by the Chinese tangram. Composed of two right-angle aluminum plates and a right-angle wooden block, Rt offers a versatile and visually striking addition to any space.

The concept behind Rt is derived from the Chinese tangram, a puzzle consisting of seven geometric shapes that can be arranged to form various figures. Li Xiaokai took inspiration from this ancient game and created a design that embodies the essence of tangram through its composition of three different right-angled parts.

The strength of Rt lies in its simplicity and optical illusions. The combination of two L-shaped, right-angle aluminum plates and a wooden right-angle block creates a linear surface that imparts a minimalist and eternal sculptural feeling. Depending on the angle of the viewer, Rt may appear both flat and three-dimensional in form, offering a visually dynamic experience.

With a focus on functionality, Rt can be used as both a stool and a side table. Its components, consisting of the aluminum plates and wooden block, are easily assembled and disassembled by users. The product's simple structure allows for convenient installation and bulk transportation.

The realization of Rt involves laser cutting and machine bending techniques. The ash stool and the 6mm aluminum plate support are precisely crafted to ensure a seamless and sturdy final product. The dimensions of Rt are 300mm in length, 300mm in depth, and 500mm in height, making it suitable for various spaces and purposes.

Li Xiaokai's design philosophy revolves around the fusion of industrial processing techniques and natural materials to create art furniture that embodies the essence of life. Through extensive research and experimentation, the designer overcame challenges related to bending technology and material resistance, ensuring the durability and functionality of Rt.

The Rt concept design was completed in October 2019 in Hangzhou, China, with the first prototype finished in November 2019. The design has been recognized for its excellence and innovation, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2020. This prestigious award acknowledges well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements.

With Rt, Li Xiaokai has successfully combined form and function, creating a visually captivating and versatile piece of furniture. Whether used as a stool or a side table, Rt adds a touch of minimalist elegance to any space, while its unique composition and optical illusions make it a true conversation starter.
