O.boat: A Fusion of Origami and Teakettle

An Elegant and Innovative Kitchenware Design

O.boat is a teakettle that combines the art of origami with practical kitchen utensils. Designed by Ladan Zadfar and Mohammad Farshad, this unique concept brings a touch of elegance and innovation to your tea-making experience.

The inspiration for O.boat came from the designers' fascination with origami, the ancient Japanese art of paper folding. After reading an article by an origami professor, Zadfar and Farshad realized that origami can be applied to various objects. This sparked the idea of creating a teapot and kettle concept inspired by origami boats.

The design of O.boat is divided into two parts that fit together vertically. The bottom part serves as the water container, while the top part is where tea is made. Made of clear tempered soda-lime glass and metal, O.boat features a grid shield for pouring dry tea, which is then placed in the top part. The teakettle also includes caoutchouc handholds to prevent burns.

With dimensions of 300mm in width, 130mm in depth, and 200mm in height, O.boat is a compact and stylish addition to any kitchen. Its sleek lines and ocean-inspired colors create a sense of tranquility and harmony.

The realization of O.boat involves the use of three different materials. The clear tempered soda-lime glass provides stability and resistance to impact, while the metal shapes the boat-like structure and adds a touch of sophistication. The caoutchouc handholds, designed to resemble metal, not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also ensure safe handling.

O.boat is not just a visually appealing design; it also functions flawlessly. The teakettle is operated like any traditional kettle, but its origami-inspired form adds a unique and artistic touch to the tea-making process.

The O.boat project began in January 2016 in Iran and was completed in February of the same year. Extensive research on origami shapes and their practical application was conducted to ensure the successful fusion of origami and kitchenware.

One of the main challenges faced by the designers was finding a way to combine the delicate art of origami with the functionality of a teakettle. However, through their creativity and determination, Zadfar and Farshad were able to shape a design that reflects their unique perspective and important design aspects.

O.boat has received recognition for its innovative design. In 2016, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design category. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements.

With O.boat, Zadfar and Farshad have successfully merged the worlds of origami and kitchenware, creating a teakettle that is not only functional but also a work of art. This design showcases the endless possibilities of shaping everyday objects in new and exciting ways.
