The Auroma One: Redefining Single Serve Coffee Machines

A Sustainable and Customizable Coffee Experience

Coffee is the second most consumed beverage in the world, after water. With more than 1.4 billion cups of coffee consumed around the world each day, convenient coffee making has recently come at a high environmental cost. In 2013, scientific investigation revealed that unrecyclable plastic pods already circulate the earth more than 10 times. In response to the large amounts of waste generated, Auroma Brewing Company designed the Auroma One with the intention of reducing the environmental impact of single serve coffee machines.

The Auroma One is a fully automatic single serve coffee maker that combines advanced technology with a commitment to sustainability. Its patent-pending design allows users to experiment with different brew settings, ensuring the perfect cup of coffee every time. By controlling variables such as grind size, temperature, coffee to water ratio, and total dissolved coffee, the Auroma One delivers a customized coffee experience tailored to individual taste preferences. With built-in sensors, it can precisely monitor the user's taste profile and automatically adjust brewing parameters to replicate their preferred cup of coffee.

The design of the Auroma One reflects the craft coffee and coffee culture typologies in appearance and materiality. The coffee brewing components are kept visible, allowing users to experience the freshness of coffee and witness the coffee blooming process in the brewing chamber. The durable stainless steel enclosure houses all the sensors, creating a simple and clean finish. The water reservoir is made from borosilicate glass, ensuring the highest quality and durability.

The Auroma One offers a seamless interaction for coffee lovers. Equipped with a simple interface, it can be used as a stand-alone unit or with extra features using the accompanying smartphone app. Even those who are not familiar with coffee brewing can easily make a great cup of coffee by simply pressing the brew button. Users can also set the Auroma One to brew coffee right when their alarm goes off or receive alerts when the beans are running low. To complete the seamless experience, the Auroma One automatically rinses after each brew. It can be used with pre-ground beans or with a modular grinder for whole beans.

The Auroma One project started in December 2014 in Vancouver, British Columbia and was exhibited at the Portland Coffee fest in October 2015. It was successfully funded on Kickstarter in January 2016. The design team, consisting of Ornicha Srimokla, Pawin Wongtada, and Rayan AL-Shaibani, conducted extensive research to understand the needs and preferences of coffee consumers. They discovered that while many people appreciate quality coffee, they struggle to replicate the same experience at home due to the complexity of controlling brewing variables. The Auroma One aims to bridge this gap by providing a user-friendly and customizable brewing experience.

The Auroma One has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Home Appliances Design category in 2016. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. The Auroma One stands out for its technical characteristics, sustainability, and ability to deliver a consistent and personalized cup of coffee.
