Exhibition INFORMATION: Showcasing the Diversity of Latvian Graphic Design

An Insight into the Innovative Design by Design Studio H2E

Exhibition INFORMATION, a temporary exhibition by Design Studio H2E, aimed to invite people to explore the diversity of graphic design in Latvia and become aware of its significance in every field. With its unique concept and design, this exhibition showcased 12 different aspects of Latvian graphic design, captivating visitors with its levitating surfaces and thought-provoking displays.

The inspiration for the design of Exhibition INFORMATION came from the process of graphic design itself. Design Studio H2E started with a simple white A4 size sheet, which symbolizes the starting point for many graphic designers. They multiplied this sheet 45 times, creating a grid network on which they positioned the exhibition surfaces. The objects were carefully arranged on these surfaces, with black texts on a white background chosen as the purest way to present information. The linear design of the grey scale elements emphasized the colorfulness of the exhibition content.

What sets Exhibition INFORMATION apart is its dedication to showcasing the graphic design of Latvia. The exhibition featured 66 graphic design works, including packaging, visual identity, book design, and more. Each of the 12 levitating surfaces presented a different aspect of graphic design, allowing visitors to observe themselves in the scene of graphic design. The design code of the exhibition was based on the basic principles of graphic design, creating a cohesive and visually striking experience.

The realization of the design involved the use of chipboard surfaces for the tables, with mirrors attached on all four sides and printouts placed on top. Three different ways of presenting the works were chosen: texts and images as printouts, real objects, and screen displays with videos. Each table had speech bubbles made of foam board hanging above them, serving as communication intermediaries. These bubbles featured specific questions that were also asked to the authors of the exhibited works. The answers were then presented on the surfaces next to the corresponding work, creating a personal connection between visitors and graphic designers.

Exhibition INFORMATION was held in the hall of the Art Academy of Latvia, covering a total area of 285 m2. The project started in January 2015 and was completed in April 2015, with the exhibition open to the public from March to April 2015. The design team conducted extensive research to ensure the exhibition reflected the most up-to-date situation of Latvian graphic design. They explored specific internet sites, consulted with specialists in the field, and carefully selected works that exemplified the best of graphic design in Latvia.

One of the main challenges faced by the design team was making the exhibition comprehensible for both those with and without a background in graphic design. They aimed for a graphically ascetic design, which meant choosing exhibits and their number in a moderate and clever way to create an inspiring and educational experience. The result was a visually captivating exhibition that showcased the diversity and significance of Latvian graphic design.

Exhibition INFORMATION received the Silver A' Design Award in 2016 in the category of Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. The exhibition was praised for its strong technical characteristics and its ability to evoke positive feelings, amazement, and wonder in visitors.

Exhibition INFORMATION by Design Studio H2E successfully captured the essence of Latvian graphic design and presented it in a visually stunning and educational manner. Through its levitating surfaces and thoughtfully curated displays, this exhibition invited visitors to explore the world of graphic design and appreciate its significance in various fields.
