Flov: The Recycling Bathroom Complex

An Innovative Solution for Water Conservation

Flov is a bathroom complex designed by Mehmet Savas and Yeliz Gumus, inspired by the renewing and eternal nature of flowers. With its aesthetic and modern appearance, Flov combines functionality and sustainability in a futuristic design.

Today, one of the biggest challenges we face due to global warming is the depletion of water resources. In response to this issue, Flov is designed to reduce water consumption. It achieves this purpose through a filter and recycling bin integrated into the washbasin, as well as a cycle between toilet cleaning and personal hygiene using stored water. Flov is not only environmentally friendly but also digitally displays users' daily water consumption limit, instant water consumption, and the ratio of filtered wastewater.

The main body of Flov is made from durable and hygienic renewable acrylic. It features a reservoir, a water purification carbon filter, a micron filter, a recycling water bin (50lt.), a trash bin, a toilet paper rack, a paper towel rack, and a soap dispenser. The movable faucet is made of brass with a chrome nickel finish. The modular design allows for the separation of the closet and washbasin. Additionally, the closet features a photocell system for efficient operation.

With dimensions of W:700 x D:1060 x H:830 mm, Flov covers an area of only 0.6 square meters on the floor. It is designed to provide toilet cleaning and personal hygiene through a bidet nozzle, recycling wasted city water. After being used in the washbasin, city water is filtered in the inner carbon filter and stored in the main recycle bin. This stored water is then used for cleaning the closet and personal hygiene, resulting in significant water savings. Furthermore, Flov promotes sustainability by using recyclable toilet paper and paper towels.

The Flov project began in April 2015 and was completed in February 2016 in Istanbul, Turkey. The designers, Mehmet Savas and Yeliz Gumus, conducted extensive research on water conservation and the reuse of wasted water. They aimed to create a system that allows individuals to make a positive impact on water resources in their own daily lives. By combining the closet and washbasin, Flov achieves water savings of 12-15 liters per person.

Flov faced several challenges during its development. The designers initially aimed to create a fully closed cycle that would recycle all human waste, including urine and stools, without using natural spring water. However, due to technical limitations and cost constraints, they modified the design to use city water. The filtered wasted water from the washbasin is used to clean the closet and provide personal hygiene, resulting in significant water savings.

Flov's design language combines modern lines, pastel colors, smooth corners, and a futuristic aesthetic. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Bathroom Furniture and Sanitary Ware Design category in 2016. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit creativity, resourcefulness, and technical excellence, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
