Insect Wing Pen

Design Inspired by Nature and Nostalgia

The "Insect Wing Pen" by AT Schulz is a unique ballpoint pen concept that combines elements of nature and nostalgia. Inspired by the classical feather pen and the body plan of insects, this design offers a modern interpretation of a traditional writing instrument.

The pen itself resembles the delicate structure of an insect wing, while the tripod stand mimics the body plan of an insect. The combination of these elements creates a sculptural effect, making the pen not just a functional writing tool, but also a decorative item for your desktop.

One of the key features of the "Insect Wing Pen" is its emotional value. By using the tripod stand as a resting place for the pen, it becomes a permanent resident on your desktop, adding a personal touch to your workspace. The tripod also doubles as a cap, making it nearly impossible to lose.

The design process for the "Insect Wing Pen" involved extensive research and experimentation. AT Schulz studied the historical background of feather pens and their emotional significance in order to capture that same sentiment in this modern design. The body plans of insects and bionic forms were also explored to ensure stability, equilibrium, and surface development.

The challenges faced during the design process included finding the right balance between aesthetics and functionality. The weight of the pen had to be carefully considered to ensure comfortable writing, while maintaining the intricate wing design. Multiple prototypes were created to test different sizes and weights.

The final prototype of the "Insect Wing Pen" was made using 3D printing technology and resin. The color scheme was kept simple, with a plain white body and a chromatic fade on the wing section, inspired by the reflective skin of insects.

The "Insect Wing Pen" was exhibited as part of a designer's exhibition during Macef in Milan in September 2013. It has also received recognition in the form of the Iron A' Design Award in the Art and Stationery Supplies Design category in 2016.

With its unique design and emotional value, the "Insect Wing Pen" is not just a writing instrument, but a work of art that adds a touch of nature and nostalgia to your everyday life.
