Soapmill: A Packaging Design Reflecting Nature and Elegance

Award-winning design by Alina Rizescu & Bogdan Stefanescu

Soapmill is a high-end natural cosmetics brand handcrafted in the countryside of Transylvania. The packaging design reflects the brand's respect for nature and beauty and its discreet elegance. It is both delicate and strong in a seamless way, evocative of educated professionally active women, who are the core target audience. The boxes come in pastel colors and white and they are covered with embossed textures inspired by natural patterns and wild flowers mixed with refined traditional patterns.

As most cosmetic products are experienced in contact with the skin, the packaging concept is based on the user's experience when in contact with the package, as a prelude for further discovering the product's qualities. Each pack's look changes subtly with the way light lays on the embossed texture, thus giving the product a feel of intimate playfulness. By this precious finish, the cosmetic product becomes an object of desire.

The boxes are made of 300 g packaging cardboard GC1 and GC2 with a matte protection lacquer finish. Each pattern is embossed with a laser-cut zinc die. The jars, on the other hand, are made out of Miron violet glass, which blocks the complete spectrum of visible light with the exception of the violet part and allows a certain part to be permeable for radiation in the spectrum of UV-A and infrared light. This offers optimal protection against damage caused by visible light, thus increasing durability and potency of the products.

The Soapmill packaging design is not only visually appealing but also environmentally conscious. The brand's sustainable attitude is highlighted by customer behavior proposals. The glass jars' special properties make them long-lasting, and the buyer benefits from a discount if returning them when buying a new product. This encourages customers to engage in sustainable practices and reduces waste.

The Soapmill packaging design is the result of extensive research and creative problem-solving. The challenge was to find an impactful solution that best expresses the brand's position as both premium and handmade, without burdening an already high marginal cost. The designers chose to enfold the package in embossed texture and to use regular cardboard and one color and black print. This solution generates a high initial cost due to the reusable zinc dies but brings a significant cost reduction for further editions. The money saved from production was invested in high-quality glass jars.

The Soapmill packaging design has received recognition for its excellence and innovation. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2016. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The Soapmill packaging design showcases a remarkable level of excellence and introduces positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.

With its unique blend of nature-inspired textures, elegant design, and sustainable approach, the Soapmill packaging design is a true testament to the brand's commitment to quality and beauty.
