The Red Line is a unique cat-overpass installed at the bottom of footbridges. The design is based on the habits of cats, providing them with a secure channel to cross roads. The overpass is made of high strength wire netting with corrosion protection, making it both durable and easy to maintain. The dimensions of the overpass are W1500mm*D400mm*H450mm.
The design of the Red Line is a combination of curved, climbing, turning, and straight components. It also incorporates cat grass, which not only attracts the cats to the overpass but also aids in their digestion by helping them vomit or pass hairballs that form when they lick their coats.
The Red Line project was initiated in September 2015 and completed in January 2016 at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Zhongshan Institute. The design team included YanRong Li, YeQuan Liu, ShiBo Wang, JinFeng Xing, and mentor Lei Guo.
The design was inspired by the tragic reality of stray cats getting injured or killed in traffic accidents. Research revealed that an adult stray cat has a twenty percent probability of dying in a traffic accident. The Red Line is a pioneering design aimed at providing a safe crossing solution for stray cats, a need that had not been addressed until now.
The Red Line has been recognized with the Golden A' Design Award, a prestigious accolade granted to outstanding and trendsetting creations. This award is a testament to the innovative thinking and design excellence of SUWU Design Studio. The Red Line is not just a design; it's a lifesaver for stray cats, reflecting the studio's commitment to advancing art, design, and technology for the betterment of society.
