Saturn: A Sustainable and Stylish Cat Bed by Zhao Yutong

Award-Winning Design Marries Sustainability and Elegance in Pet Furniture

Yutong's design team drew inspiration from the surplus materials generated during the production of modern furniture. Despite their premium quality, these materials often go to waste due to their size. To address this issue, the team adopted a football-like assembly method, using triangles to form a round shape. This technique not only allows for the full utilization of surplus materials but also contributes to reducing waste in the production process.

Saturn stands out for its unique properties. It is a pet house with a modern style that makes full use of surplus materials from modern wood processing. This approach not only reduces material waste but also adheres to the principles of sustainability. Moreover, the integration of elegance and utility offers a stunning addition to any modern home space.

The design realization of Saturn involves imitating the assembly method used for footballs. By using triangles to form a round shape, the team was able to fully utilize and reprocess surplus materials, thereby reducing waste. The final product measures 480*409mm, providing ample space for a pet to comfortably inhabit.

The interaction between the pet and its owner was a key consideration in Saturn's design. A large hole allows the cat to enter the pet house, while additional holes on either side facilitate interaction between the pet and its owner. This thoughtful design caters to the nature of cats and ensures a comfortable and secure living space.

Yutong's team faced challenges in creating a cozy environment for cats. They overcame this by designing Saturn with two holes on either side for better interaction between the pet and its owner. Additionally, they employed dark painting to create a comfortable living space that aligns with the nature of pets.

Saturn was developed between March and November 2021, beginning in Beijing and concluding in Henan Province. It was subsequently exhibited in Beijing's Caochangdi Art District. The design reflects the growing trend of pet housewares in the household industry and demonstrates how such products can seamlessly blend with modern household decor.

In recognition of its innovative design and commitment to sustainability, Saturn was awarded Silver in the A' Pet Care, Toys, Supplies and Products for Animals Design Award in 2022. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, creativity, and innovation. Saturn's award-winning design not only showcases technical excellence and artistic skill but also evokes positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
