The Origami bookshelf, designed by Liu Zulong and Xia Yiting, challenges the traditional debate of form follows function or function follows form. This innovative design offers a solution to the storage problem of books, combining functionality and aesthetics in a visually striking way.

The Origami bookshelf is a unique piece that appears to follow the principle of form follows function, but in reality, it adheres to the design principle of function follows form. The staggered inclined arrangement of the shelves allows for the storage of books of different heights, creating a neat and organized display. The special folds in the design tie the elements of the bookshelf together, resulting in an origami-like visual effect.

What sets the Origami bookshelf apart from others on the market is its attention to both form and function. Each shelf is designed to accommodate books ranging from 24cm to 32cm in height, with an average height of 28cm. This allows for the storage of ultra-large albums, maximizing space utilization. The varying depths of the bookshelf are specifically designed to match the heights of larger albums, ensuring a harmonious and dynamic appearance that complements modern spaces.

The realization of the Origami bookshelf is achieved through the use of high-quality materials such as Midwest Walnut timberland FAS North American black walnut or Gutchess Timber F&B North American hard maple. The bookshelf is assembled using a solid wood mortise and tenon joint structure, ensuring durability and stability. It is finished with a base of oil-free paint and coated with German OSMO wax oil, adding a touch of elegance to its design.

Measuring 780*1970*350mm, the Origami bookshelf is a compact yet impactful addition to any living space. Its unique design and functionality make it a standout piece that not only serves its purpose but also adds a touch of artistry to the environment.

The Origami bookshelf project started in June 2018 in Beijing and was completed in October 2020 in Henan. It was exhibited in November 2020 at Caochangdi Arts in Beijing, showcasing its innovative design to the public.

The design team, Liu Zulong and Xia Yiting, conducted extensive research to create a product that breaks through classical design principles. By starting with the basic functional requirements and designing the structure to achieve the desired function, they presented a form that exemplifies the principle of form follows function. However, for those encountering the shelf for the first time, it may appear purely formalistic, adding an element of surprise and intrigue to its design.

Overcoming creative, technical, and research challenges, the design team successfully combined classical design principles with durability and adaptability. The use of a 4mm stainless steel base, equipped with anti-dumping metal connectors, ensures the stability of the shelf while creating a visually floating effect.

The Origami bookshelf has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2022. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
