MIT Media Lab's Innovative Design Inspired by Nature's Efficiency

This is the vision behind the Amoeba Wall, a design project by Honghao Deng and his team at MIT Media Lab. Inspired by the fluid forms and mechanisms of amoebas, the Amoeba Wall is a hyper-efficient wall system that redefines the concept of flexible workspaces.

The Amoeba Wall's unique properties lie in its ability to shape the room around its users. The walls can autonomously create various configurations such as small individual offices, open teamwork spaces, and private meeting rooms. The technology behind the Amoeba Wall is as fascinating as its concept. The wall's movements are enabled by a system of omni-wheels. By driving individual wheels at different speeds, each node can move in any direction, allowing the wall to translate and articulate. Control is through a computer program which simulates movements and sends commands via Wi-Fi using the MQTT protocol. This system is low-latency, reliable, and can be remotely controlled over the Internet. The wall panels consist of lightweight aluminum and polycarbonate and can also function as an LED interface.

The design project, which started in March 2016 at MIT Media Lab in Boston, Massachusetts, is still a work in progress. The team is currently developing the Amoeba Table system to enhance the function of the Amoeba Wall system. The project is a response to the rapid population explosion affecting metropolitan cities around the world, with the goal of creating a dynamically reconfigurable workspace that accommodates a wide range of activities in a small area.

Creating the Amoeba Wall was not without its challenges. The hardest part, according to the design team, was to maximize the control precision using a set of Omni-wheels platforms on different floor conditions. They managed to overcome this by designing an auto-correction algorithm based on the feedback from motor encoders and rotation sensors on the nodes.

The Amoeba Wall has already garnered recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded Silver in A' Furniture Design Award in 2017, a prestigious accolade rewarded to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
