Shengming Shijia: A Tea Gift Box with a Cultural Twist

The design of Shengming Shijia is a testament to the creativity and innovation of Hangzhou Xianlin Tea Co., Ltd. The company sought to emphasize the local features of their product, choosing the prominent local sight Three Pools Mirroring the Moon as the main design pattern. To recreate the serene atmosphere associated with this sight, the designer consulted numerous historical documents and photographs.

What sets Shengming Shijia apart is its unique representation of tea-related local scenery. The packaging communicates the product information to users, highlighting the landmark building and reproducing the sight Three Pools Mirroring the Moon. The design of the inner box, inspired by the moon, evokes a sense of serenity and permanency, enhancing the tea-tasting experience.

The realization of this design involved the use of paper materials and printing & stamping techniques. The main color, ink blue, reflects the night, while the round film prints on the inner box evoke associations with the full moon. The outer box features two hollowed halves that form a full moon before unwrapping, creating a unique interaction for the user.

The project was completed in August 2020 in Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, China, and is now available for sale on the brand's online platform. The design process involved overcoming several challenges, including combining visual elements with operation, reproducing the local sight, associating it with the product, and appealing to young consumers.

The design was inspired by a cultural document from the Qing dynasty, Records of the West Lake, which describes the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon. The document describes a scene where the moonlight passes through three stone pagodas and casts itself on the West Lake, creating a supreme fairyland. This cultural reference further enhances the uniqueness of the Shengming Shijia tea gift box.

Hangzhou Xianlin Tea Co., Ltd.'s innovative design has been recognized with the Silver A' Packaging Design Award in 2022. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, technical excellence, and artistic skill.
