The Urban Foundry: A Rustic Industrial Restaurant and Bar

An Innovative Blend of Design and Functionality

The Urban Foundry stands out in the modern architecture of Pune's IT and automobile hub. The designers took advantage of the contrast between the surrounding buildings and the raw feel of the under-construction site. By recycling construction materials and embracing the unfinished aesthetic, they were able to achieve a masculine and industrial look that sets the restaurant apart.

The interior of The Urban Foundry features exposed bricks, half-plastered walls, and metal bracings on existing columns, giving the space a jacketed effect. The ceiling is adorned with MS trusses and a metal mesh, creating the illusion of an industrial shed. The flooring is made of concrete finish vitrified tiles with decorative breaks, adding to the raw and minimalistic atmosphere. The bar itself is a unique feature, designed to resemble a container.

To enhance the industrial theme, the designers incorporated Edison bulbs, old switches, and industrial gears as decorative elements. Blueprints of the project adorn the walls, adding to the overall ambiance. The result is a space that exudes a sense of authenticity and creativity.

The Urban Foundry spans a total area of 270 square meters, including the kitchen, with a height of 5.5 meters. Its design allows for versatility and adaptability, catering to various needs throughout the day. During the day, it functions as a co-working space, meeting place, and high tea joint, attracting entrepreneurs, writers, artists, and startups. In the evenings, it transforms into a vibrant restaurant and bar, creating a lively and celebratory atmosphere.

The design process for The Urban Foundry began in 2015, with construction taking place from October 2015 to February 2016. The location, situated in the F and B hub of Balewadi, Pune, adds to its appeal as a destination for food, drinks, and socializing.

The Urban Foundry has received recognition for its exceptional design. In 2016, it was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award recognizes the restaurant's outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill.
