Wong's inspiration for this project came from the often overlooked connections between interior design and the surrounding cityscape. Traditional interior design tends to work within set boundaries, segregating the internal spaces from the bustling city outside. Wong sought to challenge this norm by using a point-to-point method to define the internal landscape and recreate linkages between the design, the people, and the city landscape.
The unique properties of this design lie in its spatial arrangement and material choice. The internal landscape is formed by two sides - the platform and partition, which are connected as a whole at the end. The use of wooden materials and light wood color provides a stark contrast to the tall, compact city landscape outside. The combination of the internal landscape, natural materials, and natural light creates a comfortable working environment that feels connected to the city.
The design was realized by finalizing the form of the landscape based on practical needs. The work area is open-planned and located close to the windows, allowing natural light to stream in and create a bright, warm environment. Glass partitions divide the conference room space while maintaining the openness of the plan. Leisure areas with sofas and coffee tables are strategically placed throughout the studio, providing spaces for relaxation amidst intense work tasks.
The project, located in Hong Kong, was completed within a span of two months, from May to July 2011. The design's unique approach to connecting internal spaces, people, and the city landscape has earned it the prestigious Golden A' Design Award. This award is granted to outstanding creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, and significantly impact the world with their desirable characteristics.
In conclusion, Alain Wong's "Landscape in Bustling City" is a testament to the power of innovative design. By challenging traditional boundaries and creating connections between internal spaces, people, and the city landscape, Wong has created a workspace that is not only functional and comfortable but also deeply connected to the bustling city that surrounds it.
