Ego: A Changeable Armchair for Expressing Your Mood

A Versatile and Innovative Design by Vasil Velchev

Ego is an armchair designed to offer an opportunity to change its appearance whenever and whatever you like. If you are bored of the color scheme, you don't need to buy another piece of furniture; you just need to rearrange the position of the elements in the way you like, and you will have a brand new look.

Sometimes, unpredictable developments or changes in circumstances can occur, such as a fluctuating mood, unexpected guests, or even the vagaries of weather. With Ego, you can now express your attitude by giving your interior a new look. Whether you prefer a nice and tidy arrangement, an aggressive and chaotic layout, or an extravagant and erratic pattern, Ego allows you to surround yourself with furniture that reflects your mood.

What sets Ego apart from other armchairs is its unique ability to change its appearance by moving the soft elements. The armchair features a main structure made from a reinforced bent wooden material, with leg support made from chrome. The soft cubes are created from memory foam covered with fabric. By sliding these soft elements along a grid attached to the main board, you can create different patterns according to your desire, making Ego a truly customizable and dynamic piece of furniture.

The dimensions of the armchair are as follows: Width 800 mm x Depth 1180 mm x Height 1060 mm. With its sleek design and innovative functionality, Ego is not just a piece of furniture; it's a smart and interactive game that allows you to transform your living space with ease.

The development of Ego took place in Bulgaria, with the very first concept being created last summer. After several revisions, the shape and function of the armchair underwent dramatic changes. It took a total of 4 months to reach the final look, which combines aesthetics, functionality, and versatility seamlessly.

The design process for Ego involved extensive research, particularly in the area of shape simulation and physical testing. Strength analysis was also applied using Finite Element Method (FEA) to ensure the armchair's durability and stability.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was deciding on the mechanism for changing the armchair's pattern. Ultimately, the decision was made to incorporate sliding elements, which proved to be the most complicated method but also the most effective. Previous versions of the chair were based on attaching the soft parts to the back using magnets or Velcro, but the sliding mechanism offered greater flexibility and ease of use.

Ego is a testament to Vasil Velchev's innovative approach to furniture design. With its changeable appearance and customizable patterns, this armchair allows individuals to express their unique style and mood. By combining form and function, Ego offers a new way to interact with your living space and create a truly personalized environment.
