DICE: A Sculptural Retail Display

An Innovative Installation by Marco Vanucci - Opensystems Architecture

DICE takes inspiration from the contemporary flair of fashion labels and the geometric formations found in natural crystals and rocks. This unique sculptural installation marks the entrance of the NN store in Shanghai, enhancing the customers' shopping experience.

DICE, designed by Marco Vanucci of Opensystems Architecture, is a sculptural installation that serves as both furniture and display areas. Inspired by the periodic arrangement of molecules in crystals, DICE resembles a primitive crystalline formation, specifically a prismatic dodecahedra. The idea behind DICE is to create a singular component that can be repeated and assembled in multiple ways, reflecting the beauty and structure found in natural crystals.

Constructed using stainless steel and utilizing CAM-CAD manufacturing technology, DICE is made up of laser-cut metal sheet panels that are welded off-site and assembled using nuts and bolts. The result is a visually striking installation that reflects light from different angles, creating a playful interaction between customers and the shop.

DICE serves as a captivating entrance to the NN boutique, capturing the attention of passers-by with its intricate geometries. The installation's many surfaces fragment the reflected image of the surrounding space, seamlessly blending the structure within its own environment. This interplay of light and reflection adds a touch of magic to the shopping experience, enticing customers to explore the store.

Selected as part of the RIBA Shanghai Window Project 2014, DICE represents a collaboration between Chinese retailer NN and UK architects and designers. The project aimed to merge architecture and fashion design, creating a synergy between China and the UK. Opensystems Architecture's outstanding portfolio led to their selection for this flagship store in Xintiandi.

The design process for DICE was not without its challenges. Communication barriers with the Chinese manufacturer posed difficulties in instructing them regarding connection details and technical solutions. However, the craftsmanship of the final product proved to be outstanding, showcasing the dedication and skill of the manufacturer.

DICE has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2016 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that exhibit creativity, resourcefulness, and technical excellence, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

With its unique form and captivating presence, DICE by Marco Vanucci - Opensystems Architecture is a testament to the power of design in enhancing the retail experience. Its combination of art, architecture, and technology creates a visually stunning and engaging space that leaves a lasting impression on customers.
