Misty Bamboo: A Modern Showcase Rooted in Tradition

Exhibition Space by KYDO, Reflecting Taiwan's Cultural Identity

Unveiling the essence of Taiwan's cultural identity, KYDO presents "Misty Bamboo," an exhibition space that harmoniously blends tradition and modernity. Inspired by the iconic ink painting "Misty Bamboo on a Distant Mountain" and the world-renowned Taiwanese tea culture, this design offers a unique perspective on lifestyle and design.

The Creative Expo Taiwan is a platform that promotes the finest design talent and products from Taiwan to an international audience. For the 2016 edition, KYDO was tasked with creating Taiwan's main exhibition hall. The challenge was to convey Taiwan's cultural identity, showcase a uniquely Taiwanese perspective on design and lifestyle, and harmoniously exhibit various products within the space, each with its own narrative.

The exhibition space is traversed by walking along the central gallery, an experience akin to the slow, poetic unveiling of a scrolled painting. Tea canisters, a cultural icon of Taiwan, line the corridor, while light filters softly through the bamboo. This creates a dialogue between the natural and the industrial, with light refracted through the hollow polypropylene sheets presenting an ever-shifting view of the bamboo as one walks through the space.

The design process involved significant research into the characteristics of ink painting and the effect of reflections by different materials. The result is a modern interpretation of the painting's brushstrokes, with the abstracted silhouettes of bamboo appearing to sway in the mist and wind as they shift in perspective.

The gallery serves as a serene respite, harmonizing disparate products on display by being a neutral, understated, and contemplative space. Visitors can glimpse discrete display zones through the diffused light of the polypropylene, a peekaboo concept rooted in Chinese landscape design's idea of borrowed scenery. This foreshadowing buffers the transition between different areas of the hall, even as visitors traverse and experience different display zones during their visit.

The project, which started on March 7th, 2016, and finished on April 19th, 2016, at HuaShan Creative Park Taipei, was a significant undertaking. It required extensive research to develop a fitting image for lifestyle design that would differentiate Taiwan from other Asian regions. The challenge was to display a vast variety of products with harmony and consistency within the space, while remaining a strong interpretation of the design theme.

The "Misty Bamboo" design was awarded the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. They are venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
