Residences de Rougemont: A Fresh Interpretation of Alpine Chic

Combining Tradition and Contemporary Design

Set in the Swiss ski resort of Gstaad, the Residences de Rougemont are the residential annexes of the newly renovated Hotel de Rougemont. The architecture echoes the village’s chalet-only style but, although traditional from the outside, the interiors combine local materials such as timber and stone with contemporary, clean-lined furniture to come up with a fresh look. Reclaimed timber panelling on the walls and ceilings adds warmth and texture and rustic irregularity that contrasts with the smooth glass, metal and marble surfaces.

The Residences de Rougemont, designed by Plusdesign, offer a unique and luxurious living experience in the heart of the Swiss Alps. Inspired by the surrounding landscape, these holiday homes are designed to take advantage of the ample light and stunning views. Handpicked natural materials, such as stone and wood, provide a link between the indoors and the outdoors, creating a harmonious and inviting atmosphere.

What sets the Residences de Rougemont apart is the combination of old and new. Salvaged lumber and large reclaimed stone blocks are paired with clean-lined furniture, mirrored glass surfaces, and contemporary details, resulting in a fresh interpretation of alpine chic. The design seamlessly blends traditional elements with innovative solutions, creating a space that is both timeless and modern.

The interiors of the Residences de Rougemont are designed to fulfill the desires and expectations of an international clientele. The use of traditional materials and elements, such as aged wood and rustic timber, is balanced with more innovative solutions and contemporary details. This juxtaposition of old and new creates a rich texture and a natural and sophisticated effect.

The Residences de Rougemont are not just visually stunning, but also functional. The inner spaces are modeled by the use of light and proportions, creating an atmosphere that is stylish yet relaxed. The interiors respond to the outside world, offering a sense of safety and warmth to their inhabitants, allowing them to embrace nature while protecting them from the elements. The comfort of the spaces is carefully considered, reflecting and enhancing the restorative experience of a holiday in the mountains.

The project in Rougemont started in 2011 and finished in 2015. Located in the region of Pays d'Enhaut, in Switzerland, Rougemont is a mountain village that belongs to the same ski resort as the world-famous Gstaad. The Residences de Rougemont are the new annexes of the recently renovated Hotel de Rougemont and are dedicated to an international clientele. The architecture of the complex echoes the village’s chalet-only style, creating a seamless integration with the surrounding environment.

The Residences de Rougemont are a result of extensive research and careful consideration of the local architecture and materials. The design team aimed to offer a contemporary reinterpretation of the Swiss chalet, while still reflecting the spirit and authenticity of the place. The use of salvaged lumber and natural stone enhances the relationship with the outdoors, creating a sense of natural elegance and flair.

The design of the Residences de Rougemont presented several challenges. The project had to find a balance between the traditional Swiss chalet style and the glamorous appeal of the Gstaad ski resort. The design team successfully achieved this by combining vernacular elements and local materials with more innovative solutions and modern details. Accurate 3D renderings allowed the clients to visualize the final result before the accomplishment, ensuring their satisfaction.

The Residences de Rougemont, designed by Plusdesign, have received recognition for their outstanding design. In 2017, they were awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
