Contact: Redefining Communication with a Message in a Bottle

Creating Unforgettable Connections through a Modern Twist on a Classic Tradition

Inspired by the timeless allure of messages in bottles, designer Alican Faydalı introduces Contact, a redesigned wine cork that allows individuals to forge unique connections through the art of communication. Powered by solar energy and equipped with GPS technology, this innovative device combines nostalgia with modern functionality, offering a captivating and adventurous way to connect with others.

Contact is more than just a wine cork; it is a vessel for hope, emotion, and the thrill of the unknown. Drawing inspiration from a story of a message in a bottle that traveled across oceans for nearly a century, Faydalı sought to capture the essence of this extraordinary form of communication. The concept behind Contact is to create a platform for individuals to send messages into the vastness of the sea, in the hopes that someone, somewhere, will discover it and share their own story.

What sets Contact apart is its ability to transcend traditional means of communication. With a built-in photovoltaic panel, Contact harnesses solar energy to power its various features. The device emits a gentle light signal during the night, ensuring its visibility even in the darkest of waters. Additionally, Contact allows users to record their voice or any other sound, adding a personal touch to their message. The GPS function enables individuals to trace the journey of their bottle and track its current location via a smartphone.

The design of Contact is both practical and durable. The main body is made from injection-molded ABS plastic, providing structural integrity and housing for the electronic components, such as the GPS and other circuits. Transparent polycarbonate plastics are used for the parts where LED lights are embedded, creating a mesmerizing visual effect. The package itself is predominantly made of transparent PMMA plastics, allowing the recipient to catch a glimpse of the hidden treasure within.

Measuring at 22mm x 22mm x 48mm, the compact size of the main body ensures that Contact can fit into any standard wine bottle. The package dimensions are 36mm x 60mm x 30mm, providing a sleek and elegant presentation for this unique gift item. The device is designed to be waterproof, ensuring its functionality even in the harshest of marine environments.

Operating Contact is a simple yet thrilling experience. After synchronizing the device with a smartphone through a dedicated software and Bluetooth connection, users can activate the GPS function by pressing a button on the main body. This allows them to trace the route of their bottle and monitor its progress. To ensure the bottle remains upright in the water, users are advised to add some sand or other weighted materials. They can then write a note, include personal or universal items, and record their message before setting their bottle adrift in the sea.

Throughout the design process, Faydalı conducted extensive research on the history and motivations behind messages in bottles. He also delved into the world of GPS technology to ensure the feasibility of incorporating such features into Contact. The result is a product that combines the emotional appeal of a romantic gesture with the practicality of modern technology.

Contact has been recognized for its exceptional design and innovation, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in 2017. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon creations that demonstrate a harmonious blend of functionality, practicality, and aesthetic appeal. By reimagining the tradition of messages in bottles, Contact offers a captivating and adventurous way to connect with others, creating unforgettable moments and forging lasting connections.
