The Light Terrace House, designed by Yoshitaka Uchino, is a unique and innovative architectural project that seamlessly integrates light and nature. The design concept revolves around the idea of living with nature and experiencing the transformative power of light. The terrace, which serves as the central plaza for residents, acts as a Box of Light, illuminating the spaces and creating a sense of harmony.
One of the standout features of the Light Terrace House is the integration of inner and outer spaces. The outer space seamlessly inserts into the architecture, allowing light and wind to flow into the inner space. This integration creates a sense of unity between the indoor and outdoor areas, blurring the boundaries between them. The design incorporates three voids that allow various lights and shadows to enter the spaces, creating a dynamic and ever-changing atmosphere.
To bring the design to life, YDS Architects utilized a combination of materials and techniques. The simple volume of the house is realized using flat sidings with white jolipat, which are known for their beauty in Japan. Natural oak is used for furnishings and flooring, while natural slate stones and hinoki cypress are used for the entrance, terrace, and columns. These natural materials not only enhance the connection with nature but also age gracefully, reminding residents of the passage of time.
The Light Terrace House spans two floors, with a total floor area of 129.19 square meters. The design incorporates a wooden structure, providing a warm and inviting atmosphere. The living room and rooms around the terrace offer residents the opportunity to immerse themselves in natural light and enjoy the gentle breeze. The narrow terrace serves as a private space and functions as an outdoor living room, allowing residents to connect with nature on a daily basis.
The Light Terrace House is a testament to Yoshitaka Uchino's commitment to designing spaces that embrace nature and light. Inspired by architectural masterpieces such as the Church of the Light by Tadao Ando, Uchino seeks to create spaces that evoke a sense of awe and wonder. The insertion of various voids within the white rooms allows for the play of light and shadow, creating a truly unique and captivating experience.
Yoshitaka Uchino's Light Terrace House is not only a beautiful architectural design but also a testament to the power of light and nature in creating harmonious living spaces. By seamlessly integrating the outdoor and indoor areas, Uchino has created a design that allows residents to connect with nature and experience the transformative power of light. The Light Terrace House is a true masterpiece that exemplifies the beauty and functionality of design.
