Blanco Ikon: A Revolution in Kitchen Sink Design

Tim Maicher & Brigitte Ziemann Unveil First Granite Composite Apron Front Sink

The Blanco Ikon, a groundbreaking kitchen sink design by Tim Maicher and Brigitte Ziemann, redefines the standards of kitchen fixtures with its innovative use of materials and design. This article delves into the inspiration, unique properties, and realization technology behind this award-winning design.

Tim Maicher, Marketing Director for BLANCO, and Brigitte Ziemann, head of design at BLANCO, set out to raise the bar for innovation in kitchen sink fixtures with the creation of the Blanco Ikon. This design, the first of its kind, is an apron front kitchen sink crafted from BLANCO’s patented SILGRANIT material. The Blanco Ikon is a testament to BLANCO's undisputed leadership in granite sinks for over three decades.

The Blanco Ikon stands out for its unique properties. It is the first apron front sink made of granite composite, offering an on-trend color selection with extreme durability. Resistant to heat, household acid, chips, and scratches, the Ikon is available in three colors. The science behind SILGRANIT offers a level of protection that ensures the apron front on the Ikon won’t scratch and will maintain its beauty after years of use.

The realization of the Blanco Ikon was a technical feat, as it is the first apron front sink made from granite composite. This provides consumers and designers with a choice of colors and durability never before available with this iconic shape. The sink is one of the most heavily used areas of the kitchen, and apron front sinks experience more contact than traditional undermount sinks. The science behind SILGRANIT offers a level of protection that ensures that the apron front on the Ikon won’t scratch, and will maintain its beauty after years of use.

The Blanco Ikon is a 30” Apron Front Single Bowl available in Anthracite, White, and Café Brown. It features a 1.5” Rim, 9 ¼” Bowl Depth, and 10” Apron Depth. It also offers a unique custom-fit Floating Grid accessory for use with the IKON, which can be used as an additional workstation for prepping and cleaning, or as a trivet on the countertop.

Creating an apron front from granite composite was thought to be a technical impossibility and took years to engineer and make a reality. The apron front takes a lot of abuse, and this functional area of the kitchen requires a durable material that resists chips, scratches, drops, household acids, heat, and more. The Blanco Ikon, the first Apron Front sink of its kind, is crafted from Blanco’s patented Silgranit material, which combines on-trend color selection with extreme durability.

The Blanco Ikon was awarded Platinum in A' Building Materials and Construction Components Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that showcase unmatched professionalism, genius, and contribute to societal wellbeing. The Blanco Ikon, with its revolutionary design and unmatched quality, truly represents the defining aesthetics of an era, advancing the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology, and making the world a better place.
