Sheng-Hsin Hsu's design is a testament to the power of innovative interior design. The space is ingeniously segmented by a large revolving door, creating different levels and strengthening the connections between the inner and outside environments. This unique spatial arrangement evokes a sense of tranquility and innocence, a refuge from the outside world.
The design's unique properties lie in its ability to transform the state of mind of those who enter. The journey from the porch to the interior is a transformative experience, designed to wipe out outward disturbances and lead one into an unknown area. The large interior window, juxtaposed with the outside road and surrounded by shrubs, creates a silent atmosphere akin to being in a woodland, effectively separating the interior silence from the outside noise.
Constructed with a sense of both verticality and penetration using grilles, the building's design concept is continued in the interior space. Wooden materials dominate the interior, primarily designed for reception. The interior space corresponds in different styles to the facade made of stones, creating a harmonious blend of materials and styles.
The project, completed in October 2015 in Taichung City, Taiwan, is a response to the disordered center of the city and the busy crossroads. The building itself is a gigantic squared mass sitting quietly on the noisy street, inviting exploration and offering a serene retreat from the hustle and bustle.
One of the main challenges of the design was creating a silent atmosphere despite the proximity of the large interior window to the outside road. This was achieved by planting a plethora of shrubs, creating the illusion of being in a woodland and effectively separating the interior silence from the outside noise.
The design's excellence has been recognized with a Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017. The award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
