The Beyond glasses are not merely functional accessories; they serve as a powerful symbol. They encourage sighted individuals to look beyond the physical disability and see the person behind it. This design is a testament to IgenDesign Studio's commitment to creating designs that bridge societal gaps and promote inclusivity.
The design process was a collaborative effort, involving extensive research and consultation with the National Institute for the Blind in Hungary. The team sought to understand the complexities of a blind person's situation and their communication in a sighted society. The result is a design that reflects the strength, resilience, and individuality of blind people.
Constructed from copper through cold forming processes, the Beyond glasses are designed for comfort and durability. A leather layer on the inner surface ensures a delicate touch and a comfortable fit. The glasses are designed to be worn just like regular glasses or sunglasses, with the exception that they are not meant for vision.
The Beyond glasses project commenced in April 2014 and concluded in January 2015. The design has been recognized for its creativity and impact, winning the Silver A' Social Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and the ability to evoke positive feelings and amazement.
With the Beyond glasses, IgenDesign Studio has not only created a unique accessory for the blind but also a powerful tool for social integration. The design encourages society to look beyond physical disabilities and see the individual. It is a call to action for society to be more emotionally inclusive and accepting.
