City Point: A Metropolitan Oasis in the Heart of Hong Kong

Chiu Chi Ming Danny's Award-Winning Design Transforms Cramped Living into Luxurious Comfort

City Point, a private residence in Hong Kong, is a testament to the power of innovative design. Inspired by the city's high-rise buildings, designer Chiu Chi Ming Danny has created a luxurious, metropolitan-themed home that comfortably accommodates seven people.

The design's uniqueness lies in its clever use of space and visual effects. The apartment's original layout was long and narrow, with a large bay window. Chiu Chi Ming Danny transformed this into a sideboard, effectively incorporating it into the living room and maximizing the use of space. The dark palette chosen for the design is offset by different lighting effects, creating a rich, layered atmosphere.

City Point's realization was a careful process of space optimization and material selection. The maid's bedroom was expanded, and the wall adjacent to the son’s bedroom was extended to increase the master bedroom's practicality. The design features dark brown walnut wood, grey wallpaper, black-steel dining table, black velvet curtains, mosaic ceramic tiles, and furniture from Ligne Roset and Kartell, all contributing to the design's metropolitan theme.

The apartment is less than 800 square feet, making space allocation a critical aspect of the design. A central storeroom was expanded into a double-layer bedroom for the maids, providing them with a private space. The result is a small but complete home, featuring a living-dining room, master en suite, son’s bedroom, daughter’s bedroom, maid bedroom, guest bathroom, and kitchen.

The project, which started in July 2015 and finished in May 2016, was a result of extensive preliminary research. This included meetings with the client, site measurements, and the collection of mood photos to determine the most suitable style for the client. The designer also worked with different suppliers to gather materials that would provide the desired contrast of texture.

The primary challenge in this project was creating a spacious environment for seven people in a cramped apartment. The designer focused on functionality to optimize space efficiency and eliminate the awkwardness of the maid's bedroom located in the middle of the living room. The outcome is a stylish and luxurious home that serves seven people comfortably.

City Point was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder. The design's metropolitan theme, achieved through the use of mosaic, paintings, and digital prints with high-rise buildings, brings the impression of a modern city into the interior, making City Point a true metropolitan oasis in the heart of Hong Kong.
