The design of the cinema is inspired by the fleeting beauty of a meteor shower. The lobby features long rectangular-cuboid decorations that extend from the ceiling, mimicking the motion of meteors streaking through the sky. These cuboids, pointing in two directions, enhance the 3D vibrant atmosphere, while their slanted edges create an illusion of speed. Other features in the cinema also follow linear and oblique patterns to match the ceiling feature.
Meteor showers are transformed into flat rectangular-shaped stones in the corridor, appearing as if they are growing from the ground. Each auditorium within the cinema portrays the theme of a meteor shower in a unique way, offering a surprise for the audience. The design of the cinema is a tribute to the hard work of filmmakers, reminding audiences of the years of effort behind their relatively short enjoyment of films.
The realization of this design was a technical challenge due to the strict fire regulations associated with cinemas. Initially, the designers wanted to use wood to represent the meteor shower in the ceiling feature, but had to find an alternative due to fire safety concerns. The final design uses materials such as aluminum plate, steel, composite stone, marble, artificial stone, tiles, sound-absorbing panels, and carpet. Despite the challenges, the design team was able to create an elegant and grand atmosphere using an earth tone color theme.
The Guangzhou Jinyi Cinemas covers an area of 4145 square meters. The design project, completed by One Plus Partnership Limited, was recognized for its uniqueness and creativity, winning the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017. This award is granted to outstanding and trendsetting creations that advance art, science, design, and technology.
In conclusion, the Guangzhou Jinyi Cinemas, with its unique meteor-inspired design, offers a unique viewing experience that pays tribute to the hard work of filmmakers. Despite the technical challenges, the design team was able to create a unique and engaging space that has been recognized for its creativity and impact on the world of design.
