Tranquility: A Minimalist Residential Design

Creating a Quiet and Contemplative Space

When a structure is surrounded by illuminated water and greenness, the design is no longer merely decorating the space, but to adapt to the environment, to arrange the best circulation around it, and to maximize the beauty of the environment itself so that the rustic taste of nature could be integrated into life. In addition, the unrestricted, timeless design vocabulary of the structure's black, gray, and white appearance was extended into the interior, creating a quiet and contemplative space.

The Tranquility design, created by SAN.O - Keng Yao Chang and Chiung Ying Chiu, is a residential project that embraces minimalism and Morandi colors to create a serene atmosphere. The large French windows provide stunning views of the outdoor garden landscape, allowing sunlight to flood every corner of the residence. The interior is adorned with simple, clean-cut outlines and a color palette that reflects the beauty of nature.

One of the unique features of Tranquility is the clever use of mirrors to introduce the outdoor scenery into the room. Through reflections and strategic placement, the designers have seamlessly integrated the natural surroundings with the interior space. The result is a harmonious blend of indoor and outdoor elements, creating a sense of tranquility and serenity.

The design team utilized a variety of materials to bring Tranquility to life. Marble, quartz, Dekton, fenix, mineral coating, laminate flooring, and titanium plating were all employed to create a space that is both visually stunning and functional. The designers also made strategic changes to the original structure, reducing the number of partition walls to increase the horizontal space and create a more open and spacious feel.

Tranquility is not just a visually appealing design; it also offers practicality and functionality. The usage of squares, lines, and colors of different shades divides spaces with different functionalities, creating a visual partition effect. The titanium-plated mirror-like ceiling design extends the visual space upward, adding a sense of depth and spaciousness to the interior.

This project, located in the 2020 East District in Chiayi City, Taiwan, was completed in 2020. The designers faced challenges such as the presence of beams and columns in the original structure. However, through precise square lines and clever circulation planning, they were able to overcome these obstacles and create a space that is both visually appealing and functional.

The Tranquility design has been recognized for its excellence and creativity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology.

Tranquility is a testament to the power of minimalist design and the ability to create a space that is both visually stunning and serene. With its seamless integration of indoor and outdoor elements, this residential design offers a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
