The Flow Kamakura: A Tranquil Retreat Blending History and Modernity

A Unique Vacation Rental-Style Hotel in Kamakura

The Flow Kamakura, designed by Uds Ltd., is a one-of-a-kind hotel that seamlessly blends history, nature, and modern design. Located in the scenic area of Kamakura, renowned for its temples, shrines, and beautiful beaches, this hotel offers guests a tranquil retreat where they can immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of the locale.

The design concept, aptly named "The Flow," was inspired by the prime location of the hotel. The designers wanted to create a space where guests could freely experience the history, nature, and tranquility of Kamakura. To achieve this, they incorporated elements such as plastering, indoor plants, antique furniture, and modern furnishings, creating a comfortable and inviting atmosphere that harmonizes with the surrounding nature and the historical aura of the city.

One of the standout features of The Flow Kamakura is its three-story wooden building, which offers breathtaking views of the ocean, mountains, and even Mount Fuji. This design choice was made to take advantage of the residential location and provide guests with a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The rooftop terrace, in particular, offers a panoramic view that allows guests to fully appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds them.

As a vacation rental-style hotel, The Flow Kamakura provides a safe and secure option for travelers, especially in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Guests can enjoy the privacy and comfort of their own vacation home without the need for face-to-face interactions with staff or other guests. Additionally, the hotel offers delivery services from local cafes and restaurants, supporting the local community and providing guests with a taste of the region's culinary delights.

Combining ancient Japanese textures and techniques with modern materials, The Flow Kamakura captures the essence of Kamakura's unique context. The designers incorporated elements inspired by temples, such as plastering, wood, and ceilings, and combined them with contemporary tiles and furnishings. The result is a design that seamlessly blends the historical aura of Kamakura with a modern surf lifestyle.

The Flow Kamakura boasts a total area of 160 square meters, with each floor offering a different experience. The first floor spans 60 square meters, the second floor 52 square meters, and the third floor 47 square meters. The strategic three-story design allows guests to enjoy stunning views while maintaining privacy and exclusivity.

Operated as an unmanned hotel, The Flow Kamakura provides guests with a unique experience. There is no reception desk, allowing guests to feel as if they are staying in their own vacation home. The hotel is equipped with ample electrical outlets and whiteboards, making it an ideal space for workations or collaborative projects. It embodies the modern lifestyle, where guests can seamlessly blend work and play in a beautifully designed environment.

The Flow Kamakura project began in September 2019 and was completed on March 29, 2021, with operations commencing on April 14, 2021. The hotel is located in Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture, one of Japan's most popular tourist destinations known for its historical and cultural sites. The Great Buddha and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, both built in the 12-13th century, are just a few of the attractions that draw visitors to this enchanting city.

Through extensive research and inspiration from neighboring hotels, vacation rental properties, and villas in Bali, the designers of The Flow Kamakura sought to create a space that offers both function and extraordinary design. By incorporating historical techniques and methods alongside modern aesthetics, they were able to create a villa stay experience that truly captures the essence of Kamakura.

Overcoming challenges such as sound insulation in a wooden building and creating a resort experience in a residential area, the designers of The Flow Kamakura have successfully created a unique and inviting space. The careful placement of windows, louvers, plantings, and top lights allows for ample natural light while maintaining privacy and tranquility.

The Flow Kamakura has received the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022. This award recognizes the hotel's well-designed, practical, and innovative features that meet professional and industrial requirements. The hotel's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world, providing guests with a fulfilling and memorable experience.

Experience the serenity and beauty of Kamakura at The Flow Kamakura, where history and modernity intertwine to create a truly unique and captivating retreat.
